The Yardbirds
The Yardbirds are one of my favorite bands.
They pretty much defined classic rock music in the 60's. I have
been listening to a lot of them in the past year and have bought
3 of their CD's:
- "YARDBIRDS GREATEST HITS,
VOLUME ONE:1964-1966" Rhino Records
- "Roger The Engineer",
Diablo Records UK
- "Little Games" EMI Records
- These 3 discs give a great overview of
their career.
- .
- Greatest Hits covers their early phase
with Eric Clapton and it is very blues based. Most of the tunes
are covers of other artists.
-
- Roger The Engineer gets a little more
psychedelic with Jeff Beck providing a more twisted lead guitar
sound and the band cowriting all the tunes.
-
- Little Games is more poppy but trippy
as well with Jimmy Page on lead guitar laying down his foundation
for Led Zeppelin.
-
- While the lead guitarists gathered much
of the acclaim in the Yardbirds, the other individual members
provided prowess on their instruments. Paul Samwell-Smith is
as solid a bass player as you will find. Jim McCarty is rock
steady on drums. Chris Dreja provides tight rhythm guitar. Keith
Relf is an outstanding lead vocalist for blues/rock/pop songs.
